Man charged with taking family hostage in Eau Claire

Posted: Updated:
EAU CLAIRE (WKOW) -- A man accused of holding an Eau Claire family hostage told police he's been awake for four days straight using meth.

James Albrecht was charged this week with nine felonies, including taking hostages. Officials say he broke into an apartment armed with a handgun. He held the family of two adults and three children hostage. Someone was able to use toothpaste to write messages asking for help on the window. Police say Albrecht released two of the children in return for cigarettes.

Seven hours after the start of the incident, he gave himself up.
