UW athletes, United Way promote children's literacy

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- UW-Madison athletes and the United Way joined together Saturday to promote children's literacy at the Red, White & Read event.

Children and their families came to the downtown Madison Public Library to read books with a number of Badger athletes and Bucky. Organizers say the event is meant to encourage kids to begin reading at a young age.

"It promotes literacy and having fun with reading," says Student United Way President Sam Grow. "We hope that as kids get farther in school, they actually want to read and have a good time with it."

Red, White & Read is part of Global Youth Service Day, which encourages young people to participate in projects that give back to the community.
