People clean up Madison Parks during Earth Day Challenge

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Many got outdoors to clean up Madison in celebration of Earth Day.

The annual Earth Day Challenge was held at many of the city's 260 parks, among them was Tenney Park near Lake Mendota.

More than 40 years ago, former U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day, and on Saturday his daughter spoke about the tradition he started.

"So my father had an idea to set aside one day to teach about the environment. He wanted all the K-12 schools and all the colleges to set aside a day to teach about the environment," said Tia Nelson.

Community members picked up trash, pulled weeds, and planted trees at many of the city's parks.
