UW's second varsity eight take first in final day of weekend regatta

Posted: Updated:
The No. 6 Wisconsin women’s lightweight rowing team returned to the open water of the Charles River Basin in Boston Sunday to race in the final day of the Boston Round Robin, a two-day regatta involving some of the nation’s top-ranked rowing clubs.
Racing in rough water with consistent 12-16 mile-per-hour winds, the Badgers faced No. 1 Stanford and No. 4 Boston University in the varsity eight and second varsity eight events.
UW narrowly captured a second-place finish in the varsity eight, completing the 2,000-meter course in 6:43.3 just tenths of a second before BU could cross the line at 6:44.0. Stanford claimed the varsity eight victory with a time of 6:39.2.
But the second varsity eight belonged to the Badgers, who raced a time of 6:55.8 to win their final race of the weekend regatta. Boston University and Stanford took second and third after rowing times of 6:59.8 and 7:15.3, respectively.
Wisconsin’s second varsity eight victory follows a second-place finish the boat claimed in yesterday’s event, falling only to host team and No. 2-ranked Radcliffe. UW earned a bronze finish in Saturday’s varsity eight event, crossing the line in 7:34.0 after Radcliffe and Stanford.
Next on the team’s schedule is the 2014 Eastern Association of Women’s Rowing Colleges Championship, which serves as the team’s conference championships. The event takes place May 4 on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
