Madison named greenest city in U.S.

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- The city of Madison was recently named the greenest city in America.

Financial advice company NerdWallet ranked the 95 largest cities in the U.S. and Madison topped the list.

The ranking was based on Madison's park system, air quality, and the high number of residents that walk, bike or carpool to work.

Mayor Paul Soglin says despite the number one ranking, he and other city officials will strive to make Madison even greener.

Mayor Soglin says, "The nice thing about Madison of course is we're never content, even when we are number one, we will continue to work in these areas, we will continue to focus both on active and passive recreation space in our parks, we will continue to focus on doing the very best in terms of what's referred to as walkability, creating a community where people walk, bicycle, use public transit as a means of getting around."

City officials also announced plans for the city's second splash pad.

It will open later this summer at Reindahl Park and will use only recirculating water that will never end up in the sewer system.
