New marine deals could secure Wisconsin jobs

Posted: Updated:
MARINETTE (WKOW) -- Some foreign contracts could secure about 1,400 jobs at Marinette Marine in Wisconsin.
Those deals may keep the littoral combat ship program afloat.

The U.S. Defense Department wants to cut the Navy's l-C-S contract by 20 ships, so now Lockheed Martin is in serious negotiations with two countries; one in the middle east and another in southeast Asia, to build a combined 14 ships.

"I think it's the right move to make, I mean these nations are going to buy naval vessels from somebody - would we rather they buy them from the Russians  would we rather they by them from the French? it would be better to have those jobs here in Wisconsin," said Rep. Reid Ribble (R) Wisconsin.
Lockheed Martin says it has several ship designs that could work for other countries and that could be built by Marinette Marine.
