UPDATE: Milwaukee Public Market to reopen following underground fire

Posted: Updated:
MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- The Milwaukee Public Market will reopen Wednesday following an underground fire nearby.

A Wisconsin Department of Transportation crew working on Interstate 794 found the fire while driving pilings into the ground.

The fire was fueled by gas. At this point, it's unclear whether those workers hit a gas line. Investigators are trying to determine where the gas came from.

Milwaukee police had the area in the city's Third Ward cordoned off.

The Milwaukee Fire Department says no one was hurt.

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- The downtown Milwaukee Public Market has been evacuated after construction crews reported hearing, what they thought was, an underground explosion.

Authorities at the scene don't believe there was an explosion, rather a small fire burning deep underground.  Road crews working on a reconstruction of I-794 have been pounding pilings into the road.

It's not yet clear whether workers struck a gas line.  Police have the Third Ward area blocked off.
