Madison students and volunteers celebrate Earth Day

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Tuesday was Earth Day, an unofficial holiday created back in 1970 by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson.

Many students and groups kept the Earth Day tradition alive in our area on Tuesday.

A group of Madison College students volunteered their time helping clean up Unity Park on campus.

Patty Hawkins, the Executive Director of the Madison College Volunteer Center says, "This is a brand new park for Madison College, we decided it was a perfect time to come out and spruce it up, we're picking up all the twigs and trash that gets laid down during the winter."

Meanwhile about 270 Spring Harbor Middle School students helped build a sustainable greenhouse and environmental learning center on the school grounds.

The greenhouse is made completely out of reclaimed, recycled or repurposed materials.
