Multiple Craigslist frauds in Madison

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) --- Craigslist scams are happening around Madison.

Last Thursday, a 33-year-old woman sold her GoPro Video Cam and was given $360 in counterfeit money.

The woman says the male Asian claimed his name was Meng and met her in a Culver's parking lot.

It was not until she deposited the money that she learned the money was fake.

The suspect was driving a dark colored BMW and had a woman and a child with him.

Then this week on Tuesday, a 19-year-old says she was selling her laptop on the site and was offered $700 from a buyer.  The two met late Tuesday night, around 10:45, in a grocery store parking lot.

After explaining the nuances of the laptop, the buyer still seemed interested.  The person handed over a stack of $20 bills, however, when the woman returned home, she discovered the bills were counterfeit.  The bills had smeared ink and crooked print.

This incident prompts a reminder from police to conduct Craigslist deals under safe circumstances, i.e. daylight hours and in well-trafficked areas.  You can even meet in a police station lobby.
