Grant Co. inmate causes disturbance

Posted: Updated:
LANCASTER (WKOW) -- An inmate at the Grant County Jail created a disturbance Monday.

Correctional staff were called to cell block "G" to remove 27-year-old Michael Kirschbaum.  Kirschbaum was moved to a more control section of the jail due to his behavior.  At that point, the inmate became more disruptive and threw a hard plastic drinking cup at the jail administrator, Sgt. Ed Breitsprecker, nearly striking him in the head.

Staff then attempted to gain control on Kirschbaum, who resisted and struck Sgt. Breitsprecker twice, with a closed fist, to the side of his head.  Kirschbaum was directed to the floor, where he then bit Sgt. Breitsprecker and a Corrections Officer in the hand.

Kirschbaum has been charged in Grant County Court with three counts of battery by prisoners.  If he's convicted, he'll face a total of 18 years in prison and up to $30,000 in fines.
