Sheriff report tree thieves in Rock Co. town

Posted: Updated:
JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- The Rock County Sheriff's Office reports multiple cases of loggers taken trees without the permission of property owners in the Town of Magnolia.

Sheriff Robert Spoden, in an email, says he was contacted by a landowner in Magnolia about people going onto his property on April 16 and logging walnut and oak trees without permission. He told deputies when he confronted the loggers, the men claimed they thought they were on the property of the adjacent landowner. The landowner also told deputies he thought the explanation was rehearsed response.

Sheriff Spoden says his office checked and discovered other landowners in Magnolia had similar experiences with loggers claiming they were on their property by error.

Sheriff Spoden says the price for felled trees is high and could explain these reported cases of loggers illegally cutting down trees.

Sheriff Spoden says anyone with information about illegal tree harvesting should contact the Rock Co. Sheriff's Office at (608) 757-8000.
