Local college student receives letter from President Obama

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- A Madison college student has received an official letter from President Obama.

Nursing student Betsy Pelto recently wrote the president about the racial disparities she has seen in the state of Wisconsin, including the racial achievement gap in local schools.

She never imagined that he would respond with his own letter a few weeks later.

Betsy says, "The post man walked up to one of the kids and handed it to him. The kid said, one of the kids said, oh my gosh, it's from the white house. I said get out of here. He said no, it really is. He says it's probably Obama. I said no, and I went into the house and I opened it up and I just began to shake."

In the letter, President Obama said he was very intrigued by the issues Pelto wrote him about.
He called the racial disparity issue an ongoing problem in America that he is determined to fix.
