Badgers recruit shines in international tournament

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) - The lone scholarship player in the Badgers' incoming freshman class has flown under the national radar all year. Ethan Happ changed that by going international this month. The 6'8" forward was just named the MVP of the Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Germany.

"It feels great. To put in the hard work and time I have in the past to lead up to moments like these. Just the saying, 'hard work pays off.' Then, to do it, like you said, for my school, my town, my family and to represent the United States across my chest. It's a great feeling."

Happ averaged 19.1 points and 10.7 rebounds to lead the United States to the championship game of the under-18 tournament.

The senior at Rockridge High School in Taylor Ridge, Ill. has put up impressive numbers like that his entire high school career. Still, he realizes it will be hard to even get minutes this coming season with only one key player departing from Wisconsin's Final Four team. Happ plans to arrive on campus in June.

"It's going to be the time of my life, I guess you could say. It's going to be different because, like I said, I'm going to be away from my family and friends and everything like that, but at the same time, the basketball team up there is like a family. There's definitely times where you picture yourself on the court with those guys. At the same time, it's going to be difficult. They're losing one senior and still returning everyone else from a Final Four team. So, it's going to be tough to get minutes, but I'm ready to work for it."
