Dem. joins race to replace state senator Dale Schultz

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Democrat Pat Bomhack, of Spring Green, is dropping out of a state Assembly race to instead run for state Senate.

Bomhack on Wednesday announced his candidacy for the southwestern Wisconsin seat being vacated by Republican Dale Schultz at the end of this year.

Bomhack is a former legislative staffer to former U.S. Senator Russ Feingold.

His decision leaves well-known farmer Dick Cates as the only Democrat running for the seat in the 51st Assembly District and sets up a possible race with Republican Howard Marklein for a seat in the state Senate. Marklien is the representative giving up that 51st Assembly seat to run for Senate.

Marklein is currently unopposed in the Republican primary for the 17th District state Senate seat.

Bomhack will face former state Department of Transportation official Ernie Wittwer in the Democratic primary.
