TOWN OF PRIMROSE (WKOW) -- Two Dane County Sheriff's deputies are in stable condition after they were stabbed during a domestic disturbance call.

It all started around 1:30 this afternoon in the Town of Primrose, near Belleville. Police say the man who attacked the deputies, was shot and killed by them.

The two deputies, Lt. Brian Hayes and Deputy Roger Finch arrived at UW Hospital via MedFlight after being stabbed, both in their lower legs.

Dane County Sheriff Department deputies responded to a call at 233 Hanna Road in the Town of Primrose after reports that an elderly woman had been severely beaten.

“Upon deputies arrival they discovered a second individual, an older male, who had sustained a significant head injury and as a result deputies attempted to make contact with other members of the household,” said Dane County Sheriff David Mahoney.

When deputies entered the residence, Sheriff Mahoney says they were attacked.

“During ascending a set of staircases, a spiral staircase, they were attacked and stabbed with a sharp instrument,” Mahoney said. “As a result of the incident, shots were fired by deputies and there was an individual, the attacking individual, is deceased.”

The two deputies were flown to UW Hospital. Lt. Brian Hayes underwent surgery and is expected to spend several days in the hospital. Roger Finch is being held overnight for observation.

According to the Sheriff the other two victims are the husband and wife who own the home. The suspected attacker was a family member.

“The two parents have to be interviewed yet by detectives to find out the full story,” Mahoney said.

The Sheriff says this type of incident is rare in Primrose and the responding officers reacted according to training. And now they are on the mend as the investigation in to what led to the incident continues.

“Tonight we have two deputy families who are dealing with severe injuries to their loved ones but we also have a third family, a family that as time passes and we have more information share, struggle with medical conditions that are not foreign to law enforcement and will be a significant contributing factor to what occurred,” Mahoney said.

The sheriff did not release the identity of the suspect or the other two victims. And it is unclear at this point which deputy fired the shots. Sheriff Mahoney says he expects to release more information at a press conference Friday Morning.

UPDATE (WKOW) -- Sheriff Dave Mahoney says two of his deputies suffered stab wounds and that they fired shots that killed a person at a home in the Town of Primrose.

In a 6 p.m. Thursday news conference, Sheriff Mahoney explained that his deputies entered a home at 233 Hanna Road in Primrose, west of Belleville, due to their concern over the welfare of people inside.

In the disturbance that followed, Sheriff Mahoney says both deputies suffered stab wounds to their lower extremities. They fired shots and killed a person who authorities have yet to identify.

Mahoney identifies the injured law enforcement officers as Lieutenant Brian Hayes and Deputy Roger Finch. Mahoney says both men are experienced staff members.

The families of the deputies have been notified and are with the injured men at UW Hospital, where they were taken by helicopter. Mahoney says Hayes  underwent surgery for a deep wound, and will be hospitalized for at least several days. Mahoney says Finch will also remain hospitalized, with discharge possible Friday.

Meanwhile, the scene at the home in Primrose remained very active Thursday evening, with a heavy police presence.

Sheriff Mahoney says the initial call that came in indicated a deputy had been shot, but that turned out not to be the case.

Mahoney tells 27 News a man and a woman at the home had been seriously beaten.. He says the victims were outside the home when deputies arrived, and deputies made a decision to enter the home to make sure no one else was at risk, and confronted a man, who stabbed the lawmen, and then was shot by a deputy, who was not wounded. Mahoney did not identify the deputy who fired the fatal gunshots.

Mahoney says sheriff's personnel had responded in the past to the home.
