UPDATE: Suspect in double homicide has died

Posted: Updated:
UPDATE (WKOW) -- A stabbing on the East side of Madison left two dead and one injured. Police who responded to the scene, shot the suspect, who later died from his injuries. It happened just before 1 PM Friday, at an apartment in the 2600 block of East Washington Avenue. Police say it started as a dispute between neighbors and escalated.

"I was coming from E. Washington onto Union, and I saw a guy running out along the sidewalk, flailing his arms and screaming for help,” said Leila Hempen, who lives nearby. “I parked my car and went into my house, then two seconds later I heard a bunch of sirens. As I was talking to a policeman a little later, I was describing this gentleman that I saw, and he informed me that that man had been stabbed in the back.”

Police say that man is the only victim who managed to get out of the apartment.

“My understanding is that the adult came out with at least one stab wound and the 911 center was contacted,” said Joel DeSpain, spokesman for the Madison Police Department.

DeSpain says officers arrived to an active scene with the suspect still wielding a knife.

Eventually, at least one officer fired on the suspect.

“Those officers were immediately sequestered from the scene, taken from the scene and then we mentor them with peer support,” said Madison Police Chief Mike Koval. “That peer support person will stay with them, keep them calm, monitor their needs.”

Police say one stabbing victim died on the scene, a second died later at the hospital. The third victim, who managed to get out of the apartment, is in stable condition. And while searching the building police found a young boy hiding in one of the apartments. He was not injured.

Neighbors describe this as a shocking scene in an otherwise friendly area.

"It's a little frightening,” Hempen said. “At the same time, we're a pretty close-knit neighborhood. We all know each other pretty well. that's really the only trouble spot that we have."

Police say they have had previous contact with the suspect, who lived in the building.

And while the preliminary investigation indicates this started as a dispute between neighbors, they are still searching for a motive.

“It's a tragedy for obviously the families of the deceased, who are victims, it's a tragedy for the family of the suspect and it's a tragedy for the Madison Police Department that we're having to go through a very emotional time for the police officers involved,” DeSpain said.

Police did not identify any of the three victims or the suspect, saying only that they are adults.

And it's unclear right now how many officers fired their weapons.

Chief Koval says the primary responding officer and at least four or five back up officers are receiving emotional support.

Police say they're following the new state law that requires an outside agency to investigate officer-involved shooting cases. Chief Koval says the lead agency will be the state Department of Criminal Investigation.

“DCI was our first call, due to their proximity to our offices and, quite frankly, in light of the fact that the Dane County Sheriff's Office had only experienced the same result and consequence yesterday,” Koval said. “And their resources, we thought, were probably still pretty thin.
