Syrup production not hurt by winter

Posted: Updated:
LA CROSSE (WKOW) -- Our long, cold winter had many farmers concerned about their crops this year.

But one maple syrup producer says he didn't see much of an impact.

The co-owner of Kickapoo Gold, an organic syrup farm about 30 miles southeast of La Crosse, says conditions weren't optimum this year, but production came out about average.

"We've had many worse production years and you're always thankful when you can have a decent one and this was decent," says Phillip Gudgeon.

Production as a whole has increased for him over the past four years, because more people prefer natural sugars instead of artificial sweeteners.
