Man who stabbed Dane Co. deputies identified

Posted: Updated:

TOWN OF PRIMROSE (WKOW) -- The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the man who died in an officer-involved shooting in the town of Primrose.

Dean A. Caccamo, 50, of Primrose, died Thursday at a home on Hanna Road. An autopsy shows he died from a single gunshot wound. Authorities said earlier this week Caccamo attacked deputies as they were responding to a domestic incident.

Sheriff Dave Mahoney said Caccamo had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was the subject of a number of contacts with law enforcement in the past.

Deputies were at the home of Caccamo's mother and step-father after it was reported the two had been beaten. The couple was taken to the hospital, along with two deputies who were stabbed in the legs.

A UW Hospital spokesperson tells 27 News the couple have been treated and released from the hospital.

As of Saturday night, the hospital did not have an update on Lt. Brian Hayes' condition. His injuries required surgery but he was listed in good condition on Friday. Deputy Roger Finch was released from the hospital Friday.

The attack and the officer-involved shooting are still under investigation by a multi-agency law enforcement team, including Madison police, Sun Prairie police, Fitchburg police, UW police and the sheriff's office.
