Water Safety Day emphasizes safe swimming

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- As the summer season approaches, many will want to get in the water but it's important to remember safety.

SwimWest Swim School in Madison held its annual Water Safety Day on Saturday, to share important tips with families. Leaders say in Wisconsin, the most drownings happen in the month of May.

SwimWest's owner Karen Kittleson tells 27 News parents should practice safety at all times, whether in the water, in a boat or even on the pier.

"Some start with the little kids at the age of 3. Don't jump in to save your buddy, you know go get an adult and throw something out to them. That's our main focus, throw don't go and wear your life jacket," says Kittleson.

SwimWest Swim School holds swimming lessons and water safety seminars throughout the year.
