Oconto County closes shooting range over stray bullets
TOWN OF MORGAN (WBAY) -- Oconto County has decided to close a shooting range that has become a concern to neighbors due to stray bullets.
WBAY-TV reports that the county received several reports of rapid gunfire and bullets landing in people's yards from residents near Machickanee Forest shooting range in the town of Morgan. On Friday morning, officials found fresh bullet wounds on trees above the berms, something they say shouldn't happen if people follow the rules of the range.
The county is now closing the range for further investigation. The unsupervised shooting range has been open since 2003; the nearby homes have been there much longer. The range is open 365 days a year from sunup to sundown. Officials say this is the first time the range has been closed for the stray bullet issue, but there have been a growing number of reports about it recently, as well as reports of reckless behavior like people using propane tanks as targets.
Most residents nearby don't want to see the range permanently closed. They just want there to be more control and supervision to make sure everyone is following the rules.
The County Forestry, Parks and Recreation committee will meet next week to discuss ways to re-open the range while ensuring people follow range safety guidelines. Earlier this week, neighbors brought their concerns over the range before the county parks committee
