Gypsy moth spraying to begin soon

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (AP) -- Low-flying planes will soon begin spraying for gypsy moth caterpillars across southern Wisconsin, with northern Wisconsin to follow in August.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection is issuing a warning in advance of the annual spraying, which can start as early as sunrise and be quite loud.  The spraying is done to kill the caterpillars, which are pests and can feed on the leaves of many species of trees and shrubs.

Residents can sign up to receive notices about the spray here.  Information is also available at 1-800-642-6684.

Spraying is dependent on weather conditions and could occur on any day, including Saturday and Sunday.
