MADISON (WKOW) -- Republican state senator Neal Kedzie is retiring after more than 17 years in the state Legislature.

Kedzie, of Elkhorn, announced Tuesday he would not seek a fourth term in the Senate.

He becomes the fourth Republican to announce his retirement from the Senate this year, joining three Democratic incumbents also not running for re-election.

Kedzie, who was first elected to the Senate in 2002 after four years in the Assembly, says in a statement he's retiring to spend more time with his family and pursue other opportunities outside state government.

Kedzie's 11th Senate District in southeastern Wisconsin includes parts of Jefferson, Waukesha, Rock, Walworth and Kenosha counties.
