National Weather Service short on staff

Posted: Updated:
GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- The National Weather Service is short on staff as severe weather season begins.

The president of the National Weather Service employees organization says there are more than 500 vacancies in offices across the country and nearly 200 of those jobs are for front line meteorologists.

"This has been going on for over two years where they have just not been filling positions that are critical to us trying to do our jobs," said NWS Employees Organization member Dan Sobien.

The National Weather Service says budget challenges are to blame for its employee shortage, but it says it hasn't missed a beat, and it's trying to fill its vacancies.
