Fire forces evacuation of Capital Newspapers building

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- About 35 employees of Capital Newspapers were evacuated Friday evening because of a fire in a boiler room.

The Madison Fire Department says employees working in the building on Fish Hatchery Rd. noticed smoke coming from the boiler room around 5:45 p.m. Friday. Alarms were sounding and employees ensured everyone was out of the building before calling 911.

Two sprinkler heads were controlling the fire when Madison firefighters got to the scene.

After the fire was put out, employees were allowed back into the building. The Wisconsin State Journal, which is owned by Capital Newspapers, reports that night reporters and editors were moved temporarily to the building next door to continue work for Saturday morning's newspaper.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Damage is estimated at $25,000.
