Sturgeon Bay named one of nation's 16 Coast Guard Cities

Posted: Updated:
STURGEON BAY (WKOW) -- Sturgeon Bay is one of just 16 cities in the nation named by Congress as an official Coast Guard City.

It's the first city in Wisconsin to get this recognition, honored with a proclamation Saturday.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been a fixture in Door County since 1881. Current and retired members of the guard were in Sturgeon Bay Saturday to celebrate the honor.

"We're dotted throughout the state and for Sturgeon Bay to be named the Coast Guard City, that's a real special thing," says Senior Chief Wayne Spritka. "There is a large contingency of active military people here and so the city embraces us for that."

Spritka says the Coast Guard City distinction strengthens the bond and working relationship with Sturgeon Bay going forward.
