TOWN OF AVON (WKOW) – One Illinois man was killed and another injured in a one-car crash early Sunday morning in Rock County.
According to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, emergency officials responded to South Hopkins Road in the Town of Avon at 2:25 a.m. and found the car in the middle of the road. The preliminary investigation shows that the driver, Devon Hurd, 19, of Machesny Park, Ill., and the passenger, Christopher Huggins, 20, of Rockford, Ill., were traveling north on South Hopkins Road when the car began to slide on the gravel road.
Officials say the car left the road and struck a grove of trees on the passenger side, causing the vehicle to sustain heavy damage. The car then came to rest in the middle of the road.
The driver, Hurd, was able to get out of the car. The passenger, Huggins, was semi-conscious and pinned in the front passenger side of the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. Because of the severity of Huggins’ injuries, life-saving measures were administered and deputies called for Flight-For-Life. However, Huggins died at the scene and was not transported.
Hurd was taken to Mercy Hospital in Janesville, where he was treated for his injuries and released. Both men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The Rock County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team was called out to investigate possible factors that could have contributed to the crash.
