UW-Whitewater to Host NCAA Baseball Regional

WHITEWATER -- For the fifth year in a row UW-Whitewater will be the host of one of the eight NCAA Division III Baseball Regionals taking place across the country beginning May 14.  This year the Warhawks will host a six-team regional with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division III World Series at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin, May 23-27.  The Warhawks are the number one seed in the regional and will face St. Norbert College in their first game. 

The Warhawks, the top seed in the regional and ranked second in the country by D3baseball.com, are appearing in their seventh consecutive NCAA tournament, 17th in program history.  The Warhawks won the regular season Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and the league tournament and will begin NCAA play with a 36-7 record.  Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) leads the way for UW-W batting .438 with 71 hits and 51 RBIs.  Pierce, a shortstop for UW-W, has also recorded nine homeruns and six triples.  Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington), a fiery centerfielder, is also a threat at the plate hitting .377 with 60 hits, 39 RBIs, eight homeruns and has drawn 33 walks.  On the mound Austin Jones(Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa West) leads the team with a 2.31 ERA in 15 appearances.  Jones has recorded two saves and a 6-1 record this season.  The Warhawks hit .340 as a team and have a 3.50 team ERA.

Heidelberg University out of Ohio draws the second seed in the regional.  The Student Princes will enter the NCAA tournament with a 31-11 record after earning an at-large bid.  Heidelberg, who finished second in the regular season conference standings, lost to Baldin-Wallace in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament this past weekend.  This will be the sixth NCAA tournament appearance for the Student Princes who are led by Derek Hug.  Hug is batting .405 with 68 hits, seven triples and 48 RBIs this season.  Pitcher Derek Hendrixson leads Heidelberg with a 2.83 ERA and a 6-2 record.  Hendrixson has also made 6 saves in his 57.1 innings pitched, and has recorded 57 strikeouts.  The Student Princes are batting .328 as a team with a 4.43 team ERA.

Concordia University out of Chicago, ranked fourth in the nation, is the number three seed in the regional.  The Cougars are 37-5 after winning the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tournament with an 8-2 victory over Concordia Wisconsin.  This is the third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance for the Cougars and fourth since 2009.  Concordia Chicago is batting .333 as a team with a 3.04 ERA.  They are led by Carlos Olavarria who is hitting a remarkable .414 with 70 hits.  Steven Zubrzycki is a threat on the base paths stealing 35 bases out of 36 attempts.  Nine players are batting over .300 for the Cougars.  Look for Steve Cox to come in when the game is close.  He has notched eight saves in 21.1 innings pitched and boasts an incredible 0.00 ERA.

UW-La Crosse is the fourth seed in the region and enters the NCAA tournament by earning an at large bid.  The Eagles finished second in the regular season standings in the WIAC and lost to UW-W in the championship game of the WIAC tournament.  UW-L is 26-16 overall and is making their third NCAA tournament appearance.  Taylor Kohlwey leads the charge for the Eagles batting an astonishing .459 with 84 hits, 49 RBIs, 16 doubles, and eight homeruns.  Cole Cefalu isn't far behind with a .443 average and 66 hits.  Cefalu has also belted eight homers and has drawn 22 walks.  Jameson Sadowske boasts the lowest ERA on the Eagles' pitching staff with a 3.72 in 36.1 innings pitched.  Sadowske is 2-1 this season with 34 strikeouts.  The Eagles are batting .353 as a team with a 4.90 ERA.

The Adrian Bulldogs are the number five seed with a 30-13 record.  The Bulldogs defeated Calvin 10-7 to win the MIAA tournament and earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.  This is the seventh consecutive NCAA appearance for Adrian who is led by Mitch Stefanski.  Stefanski is hitting .379 with 53 hits and 9 triples this season.  Ryan Dorow is hitting .377 and leads the team with 57 hits and 5 homeruns.  Brent Greenwood is 5-3 from the mound this season with a 1.83 ERA in 59 innings pitched.  Greenwood has also struck out 44 batters this season.  The Bulldogs are hitting .317 as a team and their pitching staff holds a 3.65 ERA.

St. Norbert rounds out the field as the six seed.  The Green Knights enter the tournament by way of the Midwest Conference's automatic berth by winning the MWC tournament for the third time in four years.  St. Norbert is making their fourth NCAA tournament appearance and has a 23-14 record.  Travis Mason leads the Green Knights with a .353 batting average and 49 hits.  Alex Larsen has tallied 38 RBIs and eight homeruns to lead the team in those categories.  Matt Freeman is 5-3 this season with a 2.70 ERA in 60 innings.  Freeman has also struck out 43 batters.  St. Norbert has a .286 batting average and a 4.29 team ERA.

Regional play will begin Wednesday at noon at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
