Soldier from Wisconsin dies in Kosovo

Posted: Updated:
KIEL (WKOW) -- A U.S. Army soldier from Wisconsin died while serving in Kosovo.

Sgt. Heidi Ruh, 33, of Kiel died Friday.

Ruh's father, Scott, says he got the news Friday afternoon. Ruh says officers came to his home and told him Heidi had been shot, but they offered few other details.

A spokesman with U.S. Army Europe says Sgt. Ruh's cause of death and the circumstances behind it are still under investigation.

Scott Ruh says his daughter had been in the Army for 11 years and was based out of Fort Hood, Texas. She worked in a medical unit, repairing surgical machines and volunteered to go to Kosovo in February. Sgt. Ruh told her father of her latest deployment over Christmas. "Before she left she said, 'Dad, I just want to see the world. And I want to enjoy myself. And I'm going to be okay,'" Scott Ruh recalled.

The family plans a public memorial service once her body returns to the area.

"I'm very proud of her. I wish I could tell her one more time that I am," says Scott.

Sgt. Ruh leaves behind two sons, who are 8 and 11 years old.
