JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- The Janesville police department is investigating a dead calf that was killed and partially slaughtered for its meat last weekend.
Officers say it happened near the 1300-block of Beloit Avenue in Janesville.
Owners have a few hundred cattle on the property and say they found a calf with a bullet wound Sunday night.
The calf was cut open and some meat was taken, but the majority of the animal was left in the field.
Sgt. Brian Vaughn, with the Janesville Police Department, says, "I've never heard it happen in the 20 years I've been here. That's been a pasture there all that time so it's kind of an unusual occurrence for sure."
Police are warning other farmers in the area to be on the look out for any suspicious activity.
At this time they're not sure if this was an isolated event or if additional cattle will be killed in the future.
