Packers hope they're on way to shoring up defense

Posted: Updated:
GREEN BAY (AP) -

The Packers are pleased after the NFL draft, and coach Mike McCarthy hopes they are on their way to shoring up the defense.

Green Bay finished 25th in the league last year in total defense. One of the goals of the offseason was to add more impact players.

The Packers signed veteran Julius Peppers in free agency as a pass-rushing complement to linebacker Clay Matthews. They drafted Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in the first round to fill a glaring need at safety.

McCarthy says Clinton-Dix will have to earn his way into the lineup. But he thinks Clinton-Dix's transition will be seamless after coming from Alabama.

Green Bay opens a two-day rookie minicamp on Friday.
