Fitchburg police continue to search for shooting suspects in two separate incidents

Posted: Updated:
Fitchburg (WKOW)-- Fitchburg police are still looking for the people involved in two shootings in the city of Fitchburg Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses say between five and twenty gunshots were fired between two groups of people in the 1900 block of Pike Drive. To their knowledge police say no one was hurt during the shooting.

Police are still looking for the parties involved, but did arrest three people at the scene. Officials say two of these people were cited for obstructing a police investigation and later released. The third person was questioned by investigators, but received no citation. The shooters are still at large. Police are asking for the public's help in locating a white Buick or Jaguar style vehicle and a silver mid-sized vehicle. Witnesses say the suspects hopped into both vehicles and fled the scene.

Fitchburg police also responded to a shooting in the 2600 block of Smithfield Drive around 2:00 p.m. Wednesday. At this time police have no information that suggests the two shootings were related. Police say two men in a Toyota Rav-4 fired at a blue Chevy Impala. They are still looking for shooters in this case as well.

City leaders say the area around Pike Drive is one they are familiar with. The neighborhood has a long history of violence and criminal activity, but lately the neighborhood has shown significant improvement

"This is something for the first time in a long time we're really starting to bring our resources of the city up there," Fitchburg Mayor Shawn Pfaff says. "This can really be a place that we can turn around and I think that we are starting to see the signs. We have to address issues of poverty and I think we're starting to put the pieces together."

They're pieces like Fitchburg Chrisian Fellowship Church, which is just blocks from where the shots were fired Wednesday afternoon. Church members there have started a variety of social events to bring the neighborhood together. They've also started a support group for people in the community called "Breaking the Cycle."

"We've had people who have had traumas in their past where they were abused as a child. We've had people that have been addicted to drugs. We've had people that have alcoholism. We tackle a lot of different issues in these meetings," Pastor Thom Cahill says.

Local non-profit groups and elementary schools are also working to create after school programs to keep kids off the streets. The Fitchburg Common Council is also trying to create new park spaces so children won't have to play in the streets. By working together the community is hoping to cut down on criminal activity in the future.

"We're sad that this happened. We don't like this happening in our neighborhood. We're asking ourselves, what can we do to make sure it doesn't happen? Everyone seems to be more in tune with their community and they're working to make it better," Pastor Cahill says.
