UPDATE (WKOW) -- The debate on whether Dane County should buy a Porchlight center on Martin Street came to a close early Friday night.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Dane County Board members agreed to buy Porchlight's hospitality center.

The county will buy it for $333,000 and convert it to a homeless day center.

MADISON (WKOW) -- The location of a Dane County homeless resource center took center stage at Thursday night's county board meeting.

The board was scheduled to vote on purchasing a site on Martin Street in the Town of Madison that's currently owned by Porchlight as a hospitality center.

The county wants to buy it for $333,000 and convert it to a homeless day center.

However, just days before the scheduled vote, the Town of Madison Public Works department said the water and sewage systems will not meet the needs of the planned expansion of the building.

"So those are pretty big issues because we want people to be able to get access to showers, do laundry there, of course there will be a lot of bathrooms, things that we wanna make sure there's adequate water and sewer," said Supervisor Heidi Wegleitner.

It is possible to resolve the sewage issue and connect the building to the city's water supply, but that would come at a still undetermined cost.

"We have a $600,000 budget for this project and that's what we need to know- can all these things be done within that budget.  We need our own engineers to look at the situation and tell us how much it's going to cost," said Supervisor John Hendrick.

That's why Hendrick and Wegleitner want to delay purchasing the site.

"The issues aren't insurmountable but I think they underscore the need to take time and make sure we're doing this right and make sure we know that all of the costs are associated with getting this property," said Wegleitner.
