S.S. Badger sets sail on new season

Posted: Updated:
MANITOWOC (WKOW) --   A cleaner-running S.S. Badger hit the open water to start the season Friday.

The car ferry makes trips between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan all summer.
But, federal authorities threatened to shut it down because of the pollution created by its coal-burning engine.
Under an agreement with federal agencies, the owner is retrofitting the engine to burn cleaner.

The S.S. Badger brings in between $10 million and $15 million a year to manitowoc alone, so there's a lot of support for making the necessary changes to keep it running.
