MADISON (WKOW) -- A fire broke out on Thorp Street just before 7:00 Tuesday morning, in a non-compliant basement bedroom.
Thanks to smoke alarms, the two occupants were alerted and left the home uninjured, however, a cat inside did die. The basement did not have a second exit for a fire escape. No one was in the basement when the fire broke out.
City of Madison Fire Captain Tom Reiter was on scene within three minutes of the initial call. Captain Reiter and a crew from Station 3 noticed smoke coming from several windows of the home. The fire was extinguished within ten minutes.
The fire caused $15,000 in damage and remains under investigation.
