Officers learning new tactics to curb prescription drug abuse

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Local law enforcement officers are learning new ways to combat prescription drug abuse.

Madison Area Technical College is hosting a two-day drug diversion summit, led by the pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma.

The training sessions are designed to get officers to see the signs of people dealing with prescription drugs illegally.

"We're trying to train them to ask the right questions," says Purdue Pharma's law enforcement liaison Edward Cartwright. "When they find somebody with pills, to ask some questions about how they were obtained, where they were obtained and look for some of the indicators that the person might be lying about how they got them."

About 50 officers from 25 different agencies in our area are taking part in the summit.
