Convicted burglar back behind bars after break-in

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- A convicted burglar, who also has a significant criminal history, is back behind bars, thanks to an alert citizen.

A woman spotted 60-year-old Jeff Joe attempting to pry open an office suite door on S. First Street.  The woman immediately called Madison Police to report the burglary.  Police arrived just as Joe was getting into a vehicle.  Police had the van towed to an impound facility for a thorough search and they retrieved money that was likely stolen.

Inside the van they discovered a variety of tools, electronics, wallets, a crack pipe, and other items of investigative interest.

A 64-year-old Fitchburg man was a passenger in the vehicle.  He said he was drunk and unaware of the burglary.  He woke when he saw emergency lights and an officer ordering him out.
