WISCONSIN (WKOW) -- An online resource has put out a list of the 50 safest cities in the state of Wisconsin.

Freedom, which is north of Appleton, is ranked the safest in Wisconsin, with less crime than any other community in the state.

In our area, Lake Mills ranked eighth on the list, with 0.52 violent crimes per 1,000 residents and 7.49 property crimes per 1,000. Waunakee ranked 11th with a rate of 0.24 violent crimes and 9.25 in property crimes per capita. Portage is 12th with a rate of 2.03 violent crimes and 7.62 property crimes.

The review looks at all cities with a population over 5,000 as of 2012. Violent crimes include robberies, murders, forcible rapes and aggravated assaults. Property crimes are defined as burglaries, property thefts, vehicle thefts and arsons.
