Wisconsin women's track and field to send nine to NCAA West Preliminary Round

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s track and field team begins its journey to the NCAA championships next week as nine UW athletes will compete at the 2014 NCAA West Preliminary Round in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on May 29-31.

The meet at John McDonnell Field on the University of Arkansas campus serves as the opening round of the NCAA outdoor championships for teams in the West Region and is one of two preliminary-round meets. East Region schools will compete in Jacksonville, Florida.

In addition to UW’s preliminary-round qualifiers, freshman Georgia Ellenwood qualified in the heptathlon for the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Ellenwood is seeded 22nd with a score of 5,400 points. The heptathlon is the only women’s event to not be contested at the preliminary round sites.

In all other events, competitors will work to be among the top 12 athletes (or six relay teams) from each preliminary-round site that advance to the NCAA finals in Eugene, Oregon, June 11-14.

A quartet of distance runners will make their preliminary round debut, including Lizzie Wendt in the 800 meters, Molly Hanson and Sarah Disanza in the 1500 meters and Emma-Lisa Murphy in the 10,000 meters. Hanson, who finished third at last week’s Big Ten meet with a personal-best time of 4 minutes, 15.65 seconds, enters the meet seeded third, while Disanza is seeded 12th.

After finishing second in her first-ever 10,000 meters at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, Murphy enters the meet seeded 15th. She will also be joined in the event by Gabi Anzalone, who competed last year in the 10,000 at the NCAA West Preliminary.

Erin Cawley will represent the Badgers in the 3000-meter steeplechase, as the senior participated in the 2012 NCAA East Preliminary while running at Syracuse.

In the field events, Angela Boushea will compete in the hammer throw with a season-best mark of 189 feet, 10 inches. Laura McGinnis will partake in the triple jump, as the Middleton, Wisconsin, native ranks sixth on the program’s all-time list in the event with a jump of 41-1 3/4. Brianna Bower, fresh off of setting the school record in the javelin last weekend, enters the meet as the No. 16 seed after throwing 163-10 at last week’s Big Ten meet.
