ALTOONA (WKOW) -- Rescue crews searched the Eau Claire River for a young man whose canoe overturned Thursday night. The search was suspended due to darkness but will continue Friday.
According to our affiliate, WQOW, rescue crews were called around 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Altoona Police and Fire Chief Jesse James says two young men were in a canoe that overturned near the Altoona dam. One made it back to shore safely, while it appears the other did not.
Investigators believe the high volume of water caused the canoe to be sucked back up into the dam area which caused the overturn.
James says neither man was wearing a life jacket and the whole incident only happened 30 to 45 seconds after they started.
