Name of driver involved in Metro Transit accident released

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- The name of the driver involved in a Metro Transit bus accident Monday has been released.

Michael Sanchez has been a Transit driver since 2002 and has a good driving record.

According to Madison police spokesman, Joel DeSpain, a 68-year-old male passenger had been drinking on the bus and was pouring alcohol into a coffee cup prior to exiting.  Bus cameras captured the man departing, with Sanchez making sure he safely got off.

DeSpain says the passenger then stumbled and fell near a rear wheel well.  Sanchez immediately stopped the bus, after hitting the man, and called police.  The passenger died.

Madison Metro continues to investigate the incident and Sanchez remains on paid administrative leave.
