SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- Many runners spent their Memorial Day getting out for a good run in Sun Prairie.
The 2nd annual Maureen Mengelt Memorial Day 5k was held Monday at Orfan Park in Sun Prairie.
The event was started last year to honor Maureen Mengelt, who was hit and killed while jogging in April of 2013. Mengelt's husband Kevin says starting the run helped him cope with the loss of his wife.
"I found keeping very busy helped me not to think about what was happening to me emotionally and I could spend my time on this event, as well as my family and children," Mengelt told 27 News. "I've got a lot of friends in the Sun Prairie and the Madison areas, and I wanted to show my thanks for all the support they gave me at that time. And I see this as a way to do that."
Mengelt says last year, the race raised almost $70,000 for local charities.
