MADISON (WKOW) -- Flooding was reported on several streets downtown Tuesday.

On Franklin Street, near the intersection with E. Johnson Street, floodwaters submerged sidewalks. Cars parked on the sides of the street could be seen almost entirely covered by water.

Eric Masters, who lives on the block, said the street typically floods a couple times each year but Tuesday's flooding was the worst he's ever seen.

Masters added he was surprised with how many cars ignored the high waters and drove down the block. Brad Baranowski, who also lives on Franklin Street, said that made for a chaotic scene.

"Everytime someone would drive through, a wave of water would come up and rock the (parked) cars," Baranowski said.
Another Franklin Street resident could be seen working to unclog a storm drain using a shovel.

Most of the floodwaters had cleared by 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service says Madison set a record for daily rainfall with 1.36 inches. It breaks the old record of 1.27 inches set in 1945.
