Find your new furry friend for free during Maddie's Pet Adoption Days this weekend

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- If you're looking for a new furry companion, this weekend is the perfect time to help an animal in need find a forever home, and you can do it for free.

Dane County Humane Society, along with Dane County Friends of Ferals, Angel's Wish, Friends of Noah, and Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin, is participating in Maddie's Pet Adoption Days. The free pet adoption event is held to increase awareness of shelter animals and their need for loving homes, increase awareness of the efforts being done at shelters and rescue organizations, and to empty community shelters.

Maddie's Fund is working with 14 communities in nine states throughout the country to find loving homes for 10,000 shelter animals in just two days. The organization donates up to $2,000 per adopted dog or cat. Gayle Viney, the spokesperson for DCHS, says last year the Wisconsin group of shelters helped adopt out over 300 dogs and cats, raising $238,000

This Saturday and Sunday, DCHS, and the other Wisconsin organizations, will be providing free dog and cat adoptions again.

Viney says if you plan on coming, be prepared for long wait times. If you find a cat or dog to adopt, Viney says you should also be prepared to take him or her home the same day.
