Dad says he's cracked the code to smart summer shopping

MADISON (WKOW) -- As you get ready to buy your summer towels and sunscreen you'll want to know how to crack the code.

One man says he's figured out the internal pricing system of big-name retailers. Kyle James says he's cracked the code to help predict if something you're buying from stores like Target, Sears and Cost-Co may be marked down later. He says it's all based on the exact numbers in the price.

James is originally from Redding, California, but travels the country talking to people in cities about how to save money. James suggests you make significant purchases, such as electronics and patio furniture for summer, when the price is at clearance or final markdown.

For example at Sears, he says you'll be paying full retail price when the price ends in 00.99 Prices ending in 00.97 are a discontinued item on clearance and the price could go down even further. He says keep in mind the final markdown price ends in 00.88.

James says the same example goes for stores like Target.

"Target marks things down typically every 10 to 14 days. If you go into Target and there is something you're considering buying and it has a clearance tag on it and it's only marked down 15 percent and that means it just recently went on clearance," said James.

James says if you're not wanting to buy a specific brand look for an asterisk in stores while you're shopping. James says this means you're getting the best price on the product.
