UW-Madison considering change to Greek recruiting practices

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- University of Wisconsin-Madison officials are debating pushing recruiting drives for fraternities and sororities to later in the fall semester or eliminating pledge drives entirely.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports the university is reviewing other schools' Greek recruiting practices and will issue a report by the end of May, and one of the school's largest fraternities told the newspaper any changes could threaten the groups' existence.

"If the UW administration is intent on killing the Greek system, the most effective way to accomplish that goal would be a ban on fall recruitment," members of Kappa Sigma said in a recent letter to chancellor Rebecca Blank.

Fraternities currently get many new members during the fall of students' freshman year However, other colleges are now regulating Greek recruitment in response to student deaths from heavy drinking and other behavior traditionally associated with the pledge period.

Fresno State University moved its recruitment period deeper into the fall semester after an 18-year-old female student died of acute alcohol intoxication while pledging in 2012. A Fresno State Greek adviser claims Greek institutions there haven't been negatively impacted by the change.

UW-Madison has 16 fraternities and 10 sororities with houses. Any changes would take effect in fall 2016, school officials said.
