Gov. Walker's campaign responds to report of John Doe settlement talks

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Responding to reports of settlement talks between Governor Scott Walker's campaign and prosecutors in a John Doe probe, the Friends of Scott Walker campaign sent the following statement to WKOW Channel 27 today:

Neither Governor Walker nor his campaign committee are parties to the federal lawsuit. This means they have no legal standing to reach a settlement or deal in their lawsuit.

This comes one day after multiple news outlets, including the Associated Press, reported that a person close to the investigation into possibly illegal campaign coordination between Gov. Walker's campaign and other conservative groups said Walker's attorney is talking with the lead investigator about a possible settlement.

The secret John Doe investigation began in August 2012 shortly after the Republican governor won a recall election. It focused on alleged illegal campaign fundraising, spending and coordination between conservative groups, Walker's campaign and other campaigns during recall elections in both 2011 and 2012.
