Copps employee falls victim to scam, costs store $15,000

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- An employee at Copps grocery store on Mckee Road is the victim of a phone scam this week, resulting in Copps losing out on more than $15,000.

Police say the female suspect convinced the employee that she was calling from the corporate office and there was a recall on some reloadable gift cards.

The caller told the employee to load $500 on each of 30 Reloadit Cards, and then scratch off the card numbers, which were then read to the caller.

A Copps security staff member told police similar calls were made to other Copps stores, but no one else fell for the scam.

Copps' managers are trying to deactivate the cards, but it is not known if that will work.
