UPDATE: Green Bay restaurant owner dies after vehicle ends up in river

Posted: Updated:

GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- Police have identified a man who died after crashing his car into the East River in Green Bay as the owner of a longtime restaurant in Green Bay.

Green Bay police say George Rank, 74, was leaving a parking lot when he drove over a wall and into the water Friday afternoon.

Crews pulled Rank out of the submerged vehicle and took him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Rank owned Al's Hamburgers, a landmark in downtown Green Bay for nearly a century.

Rank's son Steve told WBAY-TV the family is still trying to understand his dad's accident. He and other employees opened the restaurant as normal Saturday in honor of his father.

"He ran it for 46 years. My grandfather built it in 1934," says Steve Rank. "It has been in our family for 75 years. So it has been a big part of our family for a long time."

Steve Rank suspects his father accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake in the parking lot.
