Motorcycle safety event in Madison

MADISON (WKOW) -- Bikers rode around Dane County Saturday to promote motorcycle safety.

The annual Badger Harley-Davidson Military Ride started in DeForest and wrapped up with a Military Appreciation Day at Badger Harley-Davidson in Madison.

To promote safety during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the Wisconsin Motorcycle Safety Program brought its training facility to the event, called THE REF. It's designed to bring an interactive learning environment to both riders and non-riders to learn about sharing the road, avoiding crashes and road hazards.

Dane County Sheriff's Deputy Steven Mueller tells 27 News riders and drivers need to be aware of each other on the roads.

"Take a motorcycle safety course and once you've done that find someone else that you know that has been trained and seek out a mentor for a riding career," says Mueller. "Having that mentor, if they've been trained to provide good advice on what to do and not to do, can help lead you to a safe riding career."

Officials say 40 percent of those involved in motorcycle crashes are not licensed and haven't taken a safety course.
