500 gallons of water used to extinguish vehicle fire

JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- The Janesville Fire Department used around 500 gallons of water to extinguish a Chevrolet Impala that caught on fire while parked on the street on Monday.

According to a press release, the fire happened on the 1300 block of Gartland Avenue.  The car was not occupied at the time and there was no immediate exposures.

Fire officials had to access the engine and extinguish the engine compartment using approximately 500 gallons of water.

The owner, Aaron Mikel, told the Janesville Fire Department that he owned the car for a year.  He did not have insurance on the vehicle and there were no personal items of value in the car.

They say the fire seems to be an accident. Though the exact cause couldn't be confirmed, authorities say it appears the origin was the engine compartment and it extended a little bit into the passenger compartment.
